Braces

Metal Braces

Suitable for both adults and children, metal braces are the most common form of teeth straightening appliances available. The appliances are made from stainless steel which means they are very strong, safe and compact. Dr Chisholm uses state of the art bracket systems which provide faster results with fewer appointments and less treatment time. With no elastic or metal ties, you will have less irritation, less plaque build-up and less difficulty keeping your teeth clean.

Both children and adults alike can benefit from having braces. For children, it is recommended to start treatment when they have all their permanent teeth. Although more time is needed for adults to get the final results, you will see that the final result of the treatment will be just as effective. Keep in mind that you are never too old to achieve a functional and aesthetic occlusion.

Clear Braces

If you want straighter teeth but are concerned about how you will look with braces, consider translucent ceramic braces.

Translucent ceramic braces are very aesthetic and suitable for both children and adults. Ceramic brackets are similar to the traditional metal type, except they are virtually clear, which offers fast and comfortable treatment with the added benefit of high aesthetics.

Ceramic braces are a popular choice for patients who want their teeth straightened, but don’t want them to be too obvious. Ceramic braces are not very noticeable at a distance or in photos and contrary to what you may have heard; ceramic brackets do not usually break or come off your teeth. They are very strong and stay on as well as metal brackets.

Patients generally choose ceramic because they “blend in” with the teeth and are less noticeable than metal. These are the type of braces actor Tom Cruise had.

Lingual Braces

The term lingual refers to the inside (tongue or palate) surface of the tooth. Lingual braces are attached to the inside surface, unlike traditional braces which are fixed to the outside of the teeth. This option is considered to be the best non-visible form of fixed orthodontic treatment available and provides cosmetic orthodontic treatment without the distraction of typical braces. The benefits of having lingual braces are that they do not distort the contours of your lips and are virtually invisible in normal social situations. As with all braces, you may experience disruption to your speech for a few days as you get used to them.

If you are self-conscious of your appearance and would not feel confident wearing traditional braces or you are concerned about wearing visible braces, lingual braces would be a great choice for you.

Feel free to contact us for a consultation to find out more about our orthodontic treatments and lingual braces. Dr Chisholm will be able to discuss with you your suitability and help you decide if lingual orthodontic treatment is the right choice for you.

Braces You Can’t See

Incognito braces are a fixed orthodontic treatment but on the lingual surface of the teeth. Lingual means they are on the inside (tongue or palate) surface of the tooth. Unlike the traditional braces which are on the outside of your teeth, Incognito are the best non-visible form of fixed orthodontic treatment, they are made just for you! The brackets and wires are 100% customised to fit your teeth perfectly.

If you are self-conscious of your appearance, would not feel confident wearing traditional braces and are concerned about wearing visible braces, Incognito braces would be the perfect choice for you.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a method of straightening teeth without braces, using a series of aligners. The aligners are removable and virtually invisible, which means you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing; and you can still eat and drink what you want. There are no wires, metal or brackets to cause mouth abrasions and means that you can brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth.

Many adults (and an increasing number of teenagers) are treated with Invisalign; however, patients need to be assessed for suitability for this type of treatment.

Your Invisalign treatment consists of a series of removable aligners that you change every two weeks. Each aligner is individually designed for your teeth and your teeth only. As you replace each aligner, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position prescribed by Dr Chisholm.

Invisalign uses 3D imaging equipment to plan your treatment so you will be able to see what  your teeth will look like after the treatment before you even begin wearing your first set of Invisalign aligners.

An average Invisalign course of treatment takes about 12- 18 months. You will visit us every 8 – 10 weeks for adjustments and to check progress. At these appointments, you will receive a new set of aligners.

Because Invisalign aligners are transparent and difficult to detect when they are being worn, they allow you to straighten your teeth without feeling self-conscious. Should you have an important meeting or event coming up that is causing concern, you can always remove the aligners for that short space of time.
