Emergency Orthodontics

Orthodontic emergencies can happen from time to time, but in most cases they are not serious and can often be managed comfortably until you are able to see your orthodontist.

At Chisholm Orthodontics, we are here to help patients across Adelaide, Mildura and Swan Hill with prompt advice and treatment when unexpected orthodontic issues arise. Whether you have a loose bracket, a poking wire, a broken appliance or concerns with your aligners, our team can guide you on the best next steps.

Common Orthodontic Emergencies

Some of the most common orthodontic problems include:

  • Loose or broken brackets
  • Poking or protruding wires
  • Broken retainers or removable appliances
  • Lost or damaged aligners
  • Missing elastic bands or attachments
  • Mouth irritation, ulcers or sore spots
  • Discomfort following an adjustment appointment

While these issues can be uncomfortable, they rarely require urgent medical attention. However, it is important to contact our team so we can assess the situation and arrange an appointment if needed.

What To Do Before Your Appointment

If a bracket becomes loose or a wire is rubbing against your cheek or gums, orthodontic wax can often help reduce irritation until the appliance can be repaired.

If your plate feels loose, please continue to wear it until we can see you and tighten it. Contact us as soon as possible so we can book an appointment and keep the plate clean in the meantime.

For mild soreness after braces are fitted or adjusted, soft foods, cold foods and over-the-counter pain relief (where appropriate) can help ease discomfort while your mouth adapts to treatment.

When To Contact Chisholm Orthodontics

We recommend contacting our team if:

  • A bracket, wire or appliance has broken
  • A wire is causing ongoing discomfort
  • You have lost or damaged an aligner
  • You experience significant pain that does not improve
  • An orthodontic appliance has been damaged during sport or an accident
  • You are unsure how to manage an orthodontic issue at home

Our experienced team will provide guidance and arrange a repair appointment if required, helping to keep your treatment on track and minimise any disruption to your orthodontic progress.
