Early orthodontic assessment & treatments

At Chisholm Orthodontics, we offer early orthodontic assessments for children across Adelaide, Mildura, and Swan Hill. Dr Chisholm reviews how your child’s teeth, jaw, and facial structures are developing, checking for crowding, bite concerns, and jaw growth discrepancies before they become more complex.

Early assessment allows us to determine whether treatment may be beneficial now or if monitoring growth over time is the most appropriate approach, helping to support healthy development and the best possible long-term orthodontic outcome.

The Australian Association of Orthodontics recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur around the age of 7.

Early treatment may help to:

  • Guide jaw growth and help permanent teeth erupt into more favourable positions
  • Reduce the likelihood of needing adult teeth removed later (in some cases)
  • Help manage crowding or spacing as the smile develops
  • Support facial balance and smile appearance during growth
  • Maintain space if baby teeth are lost early.

The use of plates early to help change the skeletal jaw positions, may reduce the need for extraction of adult teeth or jaw surgery in the future.
